Community training for pregnancy loss support

Learn how to confidently respond to and support people affected by pregnancy loss in community settings through our free online training.

Our free community training is designed for anyone working in community settings who may encounter service users affected by miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy and other forms of pregnancy loss, including staff and volunteers supporting people through homelessness and housing services, prison and probation services, domestic abuse services, community mental health teams, family support organisations, community centres and other health and social care settings.

Pregnancy loss is far more common than many people realise, affecting at least one in four pregnancies, yet it remains a difficult and often stigmatised experience to talk about. Service users may be navigating loss alongside other complex circumstances, and community settings are often places where disclosures take place.

Pregnancy loss support in community settings

Our free community training sessions cover miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy and other forms of pregnancy loss as well as the physical and emotional impact pregnancy loss can have, including on partners. We look at the barriers that can prevent someone disclosing, and how this experience matters within community settings, where trust, sensitivity and support are essential to service user care.

Practical, evidence-based guidance is at the heart of the training: how to respond with compassion, the language to use (and avoid), and how to offer meaningful support while staying within the boundaries of your role. We also make space to talk about looking after your own wellbeing when supporting others through this difficult experience.

By the end of the session, participants will:

  • Understand the different types of pregnancy loss.
  • Be made aware of the effects of pregnancy loss and why it matters in community settings.
  • Develop confidence in communicating sensitively with those affected.
  • Know how and where to signpost to further support.
  • Understand the boundaries of their own role.

This training includes opportunities for reflection and discussion and is delivered with care and sensitivity.
